Leaking active users

As I described in the post yesterday the motives for changing the name of the Instapaper app back to something including the work “Instapaper” is very clear: Active user count.

It seems there is a constant leak of active users. This is very naturally when you think about it. Previously the app has been experiencing so many new users that the constant leak wasn’t visible – more new users where coming than leaving!

When the name changed to “InstaShare” it seemed that new users stopped coming. My guess is that they didn’t find the program when searching for “instapaper” on the Android Market. Immediately after changing it to “Read Later for Instapaper” the effect was clear. See the graph below. It shows active installs and starts at the first name change. The second name change is right where it starts to increase again:

No no no! Change of name (again)!

I am changing the name of my Instapaper app to something else!

The reason for changing it the first time was to obey the rules of use of the Instapaper API. It was clear that the app could not be called Instapaper Poster – but changing it to “Insta-Share” was the worst mistake ever!

First of all the Android Market already had an app named “InstaShare”.

Second – when users search the Android Market they enter very specific keywords and usually get a long list of suggested apps. It seems that it is very important that the name include these keywords – in the case of this app the most common keyword is “instapaper” and if the program title does not include this word users will simply bypass the app.

This leads to the very obvious conclusion – change the name back to contain the word “Instapaper” – fortunately this can be done and still follow the rules of the API and everyone should be happy.

Later I will be posting some statistics on the name change. It is actually very impressive – stay tuned!

Brewing new apps and improving old ones

This current week is vacation time! This means that there is plenty of time to do app programming!

I currently have a three (!) great concepts brewing. They are all centered around expense tracking – which is something I really need myself. I will announce these programs properly as they appear on Android Market.

Furthermore I am rewriting large parts of my Instapaper client. These rewrites should make the program more secure (not that it is insecure at the moment). The changes should also add some long awaited features (one feature at least) to the app.

Any suggestions or error reports are more than welcome as comments on the blog or by mailing to mb@southbound.dk.

Insta-Share – Platform distribution

Insta-Share is the oldest Android app I have released. It is also the app with the widest platform compatibility. Insta-Share is compatible with API Level 4 which translates to the Android 1.6 Platform.

The following graph shows the platform distribution right now.

The shares are (largest to smallest) 2.2, 2.3.3, “Other”, 2.1 – It seems that supporting versions below 2.1 is not really needed anymore.

Check out this article for some nice graphs on platform distribution development.

“Instapaper Poster” changes name to “Insta-Share”

It has been a long time since I launched the first version on Instapaper Poster. Now it is time for a change.

I was very proud to announce features as delayed offline posting and posting from the official twitter app et. al. - but the next step will be even bigger!

I have requested an Instapaper API key – and therefore I (and the app) must comply with the Instapaper API Terms of Use. These clearly state that the app must not be called Instapaper *something*.

Insta-Share 1.11 released

I just released Insta-Share version 1.11 to Android Market.

This version fixes some errors reported by users. I’d like to thank everyone who is sending crash reports via Android Market or feedback by e-mail to mb@southbound.dk.

I am sorry for the frequent updates these days – but I think that resolving issues as they come to light have first priority.
